If you are reading this you probably already know that Willie is one of the most creative, remarkable, and diverse performers of all time. In this review, I’m not going to rate the albums, impartial offer some insights into the CD’s and DVD’s that I have purchased – and I’m pleased I’ve purchased them all.

“The Indispensable Willie Nelson” is significant. “The Red Headed Stranger” is one of the greatest albums of all time. It is pure genius. If you accumulate the 70th birthday edition, you obtain a remastered track and extra songs. There are no less than six “A” level songs on this CD, nothing short of fantastic. Plus, you come by fourteen minutes of enormous yarn telling. As a yarn teller, Willie is only rivaled by Native American artist Robert Mirabal (“Indians Indians”, “Taos Tales”, “Music From A Painted Cave”, “Mirabal”, etc.) .

“Willie and Family Live”, done around 1975, is a mountainous live album. It has lots of energy. A highlight for me was Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, and Johnny Paycheck singing “Incredible Grace” together. It also contains the fourteen diminutive chronicle of the Red Headed Stranger, including “Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain”. This live performance of Willie’s first #1 hit is the best I have heard on any album. There is a minute extra “oomph” on every song in the CD. Again, beget certain you obtain the 70th birthday edition, it has extra goodies.

If you like the early elegant hits that Willie wrote for everyone else, like “Crazy”, “Night Life”, and “Humorous How Time Slips Away”, then you need to also earn the “Milk Cow Blues” CD. Willie performs these and more Blues standards, usually in a duet format, with outstanding artists such as B.B. King – Rolling Stone Magazine’s choice as the 3rd greatest guitarist of all time. Hearing BB and Willie strum and stutter together on “Night Life” and “The Thrill is Gone” is indeed a thrill. Willie performs this album with a first class Blues band and it is a first class Blues album.

Willie’s latest album, “It Will Always Be” is once again a solid share of work. Duets with Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams benefit form it special, but the best allotment of this album is the haunting duet of Willie and Paula Nelson on the song “It Will Always Be”. This is a song that hits you in the gut, and it rivals Bruce Springstein’s “Streets of Philadelphia” in terms of its raw emotion. A number of people, including me, cried the first time they heard it: “I’m tied of this and I’m running out of time; feels like dyin’, feels like cryin’; and I’m running out of time.” Say it ain’t so, Willie!! A second great song was written by another member of the Nelson clan. The title song is very gorgeous. The tribute to the land Willie loves, “Texas”, is too short but very meaningful. If this was Willie’s last CD, he went out as “The Midnight Rider”, a enormous song for the leader of the outlaw movement: “They ain’t gonna come by me, I ain’t go let `em accumulate the Midnight Rider.”

“Spirit” and “Teatro” are brother/sister CDs. Both have a strong thematic core, although they are not stories. “Spirit” is one of those rare CD’s when every heed seems significant. For most, you’ll listen to it less than the other CD’s, but like it equally as grand. For a few, you’ll play it by the hours. It is essentially a tale of coping with lost care for, redefining your relationship with yourself and with God, and finding adore again. The music and the whole CD are moderately paced, with a strong, loyal spiritual tone to it. It has a light Latin sound, well-known to Willie’s roots. Pictures of Willie on this album watch like he came from an customary Holy Land.

“Teatro” is the mirror of “Spirit”. Again, it is a memoir of coping with lost esteem, but the narrative goes south, ending in abolish and psychological slay. Teatro means “theater” in Spanish and this is suited to support in mind in listening to the CD. It is impartial a play folks! You make differently and 70 than you do at 40, it is a biological rule. Willie’s shows have always moved quick from one song to the other, so the travel of the concert is nothing current. The savor from the audience is shown at the demolish when Willie is signing autograph after autograph. The bottom line is this, if you like Willie, if you would like to examine him live occasionally instead of impartial hearing him through the box, and if you want those images of him at 70, then you should assume this DVD. You’ll come by it worthwhile.

Branagh’s and Thompson’s chemistry works to optimum finish here; and while every Kenneth Branagh movie is as mighty star vehicle for its creator as it is about the project itself, Benedick’s conversion from a man sure not to let fancy “transform [him] into an oyster” into a married man (because after all, “the world must be peopled. When I said I would die a bachelor I did not reflect I should live – till I were married”!) is a pure joy to glance. Emma Thompson’s Beatrice, similarly, is an incredibly unusual, independent young woman; and scenes like her advice to Hero not to blindly follow her father’s (Don Leonato’s) wishes in marrying but, if principal, “construct another courtesy and say, Father, as it please *me*” only enhance the play’s and her character’s timeless quality.

Yet, while the leading couple’s performances are the movie’s smart anchor pieces, there is considerable to delight in in the remaining cast as well: Richard Briers’s Don Leonato, albeit more English country squire than Italian nobleman, is the kind of doting father that many a daughter would surely wish for; and what he may lack in Italian flavor is more than made up for in Brian Blessed’s Don Antonio, Leonato’s brother. Kate Beckinsale is a charming, innocent Hero and well-matched with Robert Sean Leonard’s Claudio (who after “Dull Poets Society” seemed virtually guaranteed to indicate up in a Shakespeare adaptation sooner or later) ; as generally, leaving aside the appropriateness of American accents in a movie like this, the Hollywood contingent acquits itself well. Washington’s, Leonard’s and Brier’s “Cupid” set particularly is a delight (even if the dilapidated might occasionally have gained extra mileage enunciation-wise) . The cast is rounded out by several actors who might well have demanded larger roles but nevertheless glance ideally matched for the parts they play, including Imelda Staunton and Phyllida Law as Hero’s gentlewomen Margaret and Ursula, Gerard Horan and Richard Clifford as Don John’s associates Borachio and Conrade, and Ben Elton as Dogberry’s “neighbor” Verges. (In addition, procure composer Patrick Doyle stands in as minstrel Balthazar.) The changeable Don John has fair been stopped in a rebellion against his brother Don Pedro, by young hero Claudio. Now all of them (including Don John, whom his brother has forgiven) are arriving in Messina, the home of grand Leonato. But when they find there, Claudio immediately falls in appreciate with Leonato’s exquisite daughter Hero. And despite the efforts of Don John, Don Pedro manages to derive the two young lovers together and altar-bound.

But Don Pedro isn’t willing to close there. Hero’s cousin Beatrice has a long-running feud with Claudio’s pal Benedick — they insult each other, they bicker, they argue about everything (“It is so indeed — he is no less than a stuffed man!”) . What’s more, both of them train to discontinue single forever. (“All women shall pardon me — I shall live a bachelor!”) Pedro and the others conspire to collect Benedick and Beatrice to somehow topple in care for with each other. And at first it seems that everything is going well — until Don John manages to cast doubt on Hero’s honor

There’s a definite timeless quality to “Distinguished Ado” — not honest the dialogue, but the simple costumes and the buildings in it. That leaves the audience free to pay more attention to the dialogue and its status. And what a location it is! “Grand Ado” is brimming over with silly dialogue, dastardly plots, comedic supporting characters and odd pairings. (Beatrice and Benedick are the sort of love-hate couple that a lot of movies try to have, but don’t succeed with)

The dialogue is mostly (if not all) Shakespeare’s have, but it’s not indispensable to be a Shakespeare buff to understand what they’re saying. It’s not dumbed down, either — it’s fair spoken as normally as ordinary English. And the Tuscan landscape sparkles with life, passion, and lots of fruit and wine. You don’t need to be a fan already to understand and indulge in this movie.

Kenneth Branagh (who also directed and adapted the play) is astonishing as Benedick, lovably witty and egotistical; he gets a puny comic at times (such as his bird calls or joyous romp in the fountain), but demonstrates his serious ability after Hero is disgraced. the outstanding Emma Thompson is even better as the sharp-tongued Beatrice, a fiery young woman with her possess mind and definitely her believe mouth. Thompson lashes out Shakespeare’s witty lines as easily as if she honest view them up herself; one of her most mighty scenes is here. Denzel Washington (Don Pedro) looks like he’s having a substantial time; Keanu Reeves (Don John) is a bit flat in places, but glowers well enough. Kate Beckinsale’s first movie role (Hero) is suitably sweet and adorable. Robert Sean Leonard (Claudio) is the one archaic link in the cast; he seems a bit too overwrought and hysterical to be a major hero. (No pun intended)

This movie was unavailable for a very long time and only recently was rereleased on DVD. The DVD is glorious spare; aside from the movie, there are a few DVD promos (for “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride” — both, I perceive, comedic romances) and a brief making-of featurette. The featurette doesn’t really offer great that is current, but does give some insights into the chosen settings and why the cast wished to do the movie.

Those who enjoyed Branagh’s “Hamlet” and “Henry V” will rejoice in “Powerful Ado About Nothing,” the quintessential romantic comedy. Comic, sweet, romantic, and incredibly well-acted, this is a keeper.

First, I have to effect that most of these reviews are for the somewhat disappointing Criterion Edition released in 1999. The version I’ll be reviewing is the powerful improved Divimax (high definition digital transfer) from Anchor Bay. The two DVD edition of Time Bandits from Anchor Bay has isn’t perfect but it’s a stark improvement on the previous no frills version they issued in 1999 and the Criterion Edition from the same time frame.

The high definition transfer and the fact that the film has been enhanced for 16×9 televisions are definitive improvements on the previous edition. The describe is sharper although I did sign some minor edge enhancement and digital compression issues. On the whole, though, the record looks beneficial. The first disc features only the film and it doesn’t have the spacious audio commentary compilation by Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner, John Cleese and Craig Warnock. That’s a pity because that would have made this the ultimate edition of the film.

Now the major complaint from some folks regarding the image size. Gilliam shot Time Bandits to be shown theatrically in a 1.85:1 ratio. Time Bandits was probably shot pudgy hide (like Kubrick’s films so that they wouldn’t be badly “cropped” when released) . More than likely Gilliam matted the image AFTER the film was shot. The widescreen image IS the device Gilliam intended the film to be seen) .

The worst looking DVD was the one save out by the highly regarded Criterion Company. It featured interlace problems, an unstable narrate (perhaps due to a flaw during the telecine transfer) and sound that sound left great to be desired. The aspect ratio (the dimension of the width and heighth of the film on cover) is lawful here and the beautifully detailed transfer is so involving that, on occasion, you can even gape the limitations (there’s a hint of wires in some scenes) of Terry Gilliam’s optical effects.

The soundtrack has been remixed for the Dolby Digital EX track although I grand preferred the more natural sounding 5.1 mix. Since the current source material was designed for stereo and there were some recording limitations at the time the film was made, the tinny sound is composed a bit of a spot. That’s not a jam that can be easily solved unfortunately. Level-headed, Anchor Bay does the best they can with the materials at hand.

The second disc contains all the extras. The feaurettes include the wonderful The Directors: The films of Terry Gilliam with interviews featuring Gilliam, Shelly Duvall, Brad Pitt, Amanda Plummer, Mercedes Ruehl, Madeleine Stowe and David Warner. There’s also an interview with Gilliam and Palin as well as the novel theatrical trailers for the film. Some of these features duplicate comments heard on the commentary track for the film from Criterion.

There’s also a Terry Gilliam bio and, most importantly, a DVD-Rom version of the modern screenplay. Both these features are no where else to be found. Anchor Bay includes a fold out Method of the Universe which also has a background on the film production.

As one would inquire of a Criterion release, the DVD of “Time Bandits” is an absolute pleasure, from the tidy film transfer to the many appetizing added features.

The production scrapbook is a love, along with the commentary by Gilliam and Palin. These features truly enrich one’s appreciation for the film; not only do they lavish praise on the actors playing the “dwarves” (who, in retrospect, did nothing less than a courageous job), but also content many of the clever tricks that allowed them to beget such a sumptuously exquisite film for the cost of Speilberg’s monthly catering bill. Compare this film to expensive clunkers like “Tron” (which came out a year later!) to like the extent of Gilliam’s craft. Cleese’s description of his day’s work is howlingly silly, and David Warner is suited and wryly laughable. The now-grown Craig Warnock is not particularly eloquent, however, and it’s hard to deny if he’s joking about the film scarring him psychologically!

The trailer is simply dreadful, after a promising inaugurate, but it’s indicative of AVCO’s cluelessness about how to market such a current and new film. They tried to pass it off as Python style comedy, noble for kiddies and fun for grow-ups. In fact, it’s nothing of the kind – it’s a unsafe and rigorous film that one may wish to retain out of the hands of cramped children.

Despite it’s vague resemblance to “The Wizard of Oz” told upside down (or inside out? ), “Time Bandits” is not a typical (unique) children’s film. It has an passe Grimm-ness, with creatures dying unfavorable, sweaty deaths and even “apt” characters behaving quite badly at times. In short, it is more utterly unprejudiced than any fantasy film made since Disney bowdlerized “Snow White.”

Understanding that young people like to be disturbed, and taking irregular delight in how “poor” his band of dwarf thieves are, Gilliam places a very trusty boy (so precise, he’s almost expressionless) in an astounding series of situations, exposing him to bad ordeals with only a shifty gang of unreliable and occasionally dreary companions to guide and protect him – though mostly they ignore him or egg him on to be more like them (being dwarves, he towers over them, both physically and morally) . At the very moment he feels he’s found the proper dwelling to be, they swagger him away with no regard for his wishes or feelings, and ultimately thrust him into conflict with forces neither he nor they can comprehend, let alone master.

Sounds a bit like growing up, doesn’t it?

Along the blueprint, Gilliam tweaks various legendary Gigantic and Worthy Figures (Napoleon, Agamemnon, Robin Hood – even Satan [referred to exclusively as "The Unsuitable Genius"]), not to mention technology and consumerism, to direct the narrow-minded, clumsy, grasping people we grown-ups really are.

The ending remains controversial, although I can remember seeing it in my slow teens and feeling utterly liberated by it (what teenage boy doesn’t want his parents to evaporate, at least once in a while? ) . There’s more honesty and meaning in the last five minutes than any patently fraudulent “jubilant ending” could hope to enact, although young children conditioned to question Pocahontas to live happily ever after with John Smith (which, of course, she didn’t) may obtain it too disturbing.

“Time Bandits” is a triumphant employ of fantasy to direct truth, of the power of the imagination to bag the reality hidden in unimaginative leer (the figures in the final conflict can all be found in the boy’s room in the early scenes) . It’s an unforgettable film, with images and characters that will cease with you for a lifetime, even if you aren’t an impressionable, disaffected, precocious brat (like I was when I first saw it), but especially if you are!

Hehehe. Yes, I am a Yami Bakura fan!! ^_^ This DVD is estimable. Not only does it have Yami B’s first episode, it also has BOTH Panik episodes!!! (They were spliced into one episode on the WB, but they’re powerful better as two different episodes.) And there’s even subtitles (I lift to judge of them as closed-captioning) and a procedure to change the language into Spanish! Yami B’s Spanish reveal ain’t too unpleasant X3 You should definitely purchase this!!! ^_^

This is so grand im ordering it i have seen it on tv and its really superior they secure their souls trapped in their current cards by obnoxious bakura then when thats over mai has lost all her star chips to the eliminator panik and yugi has to obtain them relieve for his friend. VCi’s offering of the 1956 Lone Ranger feature film is outsatnding. Prior to this, I had to leer my venerable VHS EP Mode version and it was not excellent. It never is with EP mode products. The VCi copy is sure and crisp with intellectual and vibrant colors, the scheme a DVD rendition of classic film should be. Despite the Dwelling 1 stamp, it is an all regions DVD and all Lone Rnager fans around the world will have the chance to like this one. This is the best Lone Ranger film of all times as the production values are top notch. The sequel – The Lost City of Gold pales in comparison as somewhat akin to a made for TV movie. That must also be had to complete the cinema presenations of the Lone Ranger. The 1980’s feature “Myth of the Lone Ranger” is an aberration, nice to scrutinize but not to net. Congratulations to VCi.

“Ghostbusters II” recieved a fine amount of awful press when it was first released, but it is a charming, well produced and yes, comical sequel to the first blockbuster. The film picks up five years after the new. We accumulate the Ghostbusters out of business and broke, Bill Murray is hosting a bizarre cable access present called “World of the Psychic” and Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson are performing at children’s parties. Aren’t the parents nervous about the GB’s wielding their proton packs around thier youngsters??

The fable speeds up when the Ghostbusters reunite and glimpse the soul of an aged tyrant resides in a portrait in a museum. The tyrant, named Vigo has decided to consume possession of Sigourney Weaver’s child so he can live again to rule the world. This place seems more disturbing than the region in the first film, but director Ivan Reitman gives us plenty of humor to counter balance.

While not as humorous as the first film, “Ghostbusters II” proves to be an tantalizing follow up to the first classic film. After years of viewing, “Ghostbusters II” reveals itself to be a classic in it’s have true.

A lot of the unique magic is absent in this belated sequel. The storyline isn’t up to distinguished and is never taken chunky advantage of. One thing that is sorely missed is the wide, much regain from the first film. The slow Elmer Bernstein ducked out of scoring this one and (the terrible) Randy Edelman took over. This could have been alright if he respected Bernstein’s work but he faded none of the themes from the new. It’s all objective light-hearted cues and dullness.

The state takes a backseat to long character explanation and development. The Ghostbusters have been out of business since blowing up Central Park West. Which is total crap! The saved the world from the destruction of Gozer. Why the hell would they go out of business? A totally ridiculous chronicle that does nothing but aggravate fans of the first. Who on earth plan of this?

Now the Ghostbusters are forbidden from performing public services. But a narrow-minded Consider wants to send them to jail for causing a massive blackout. Then, 2 ghosts demonstrate up and they bust them and before you can say ‘Who ya gonna call? ‘ they are wait on busting undead ass.

Something I earn very listless and annoying about the residence is that the aforementioned Mediate and a City Attorney repeatedly say that they do not have in ghosts. Obviously these guys have forgotten about the 200-foot marshmallow man and the defective reveal of Gozer booming all over Manhattan Island.

And this time the villain isn’t as scary as the Gozer. Now we have Vigo, a 14th century madman who wants to return to living invent and has targeted Weaver’s child as his host. He plans to do this before the stroke of midnight on Modern Years Eve 1989 or some baloney. For a film that has it’s build-up and climax on Modern Year’s Eve there is no mention Xmas whatsoever. And the ending with the hidden painting is REALLY corny.

Bill Murray was very initiate about his distaste for this film when it came out. He said it was pointless and he never really wanted to do it. The Ghostbusters franchise was taken in a considerable stronger direction with The Accurate Ghostbusters TV exhibit. At least with that they never went out of business for saving the world. Honestly, what stupidity!

However, it was thanks to the TV display that this movie was toned down a bit and more family-friendly. But the TV exhibit and the first movie have something this film doesn’t; atmosphere.

A scoop of trivia: In the montage with the Ghostbusters running all over Original York after suddenly coming aid into Business we search for a clip of Ray driving like a maniac and Peter gives him a curious study. This scene was originally going to follow after the scene in which Ray is hypnotised by the painting of Vigo. The Ectomobile was supposed to shatter into a tree in Central Park and we study a shot of the license plate drop off and Ray advance out of his trance. But this entire scene was slit from the film and is only left in the montage.

Ghostbusters 2 is to Ghostbusters what MIIB was to MIB. A total declare. Which makes the out-of-business/back-in-business site even more retarded as we have to go through the establishments all over again instead of devoting that time to a stronger, better location.

Filmed in Panavision the DVD is in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with wonderful Dolby 5.1 sound. There are no extras other than a trailer.

“Looney Tunes: Attend In Action” is the perfect marriage of live action and animation. To complete this picturesque scenario, it takes a “humanized” all-star cast (Jenna Elfman, Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, including others), along with some zany Looney Tunes charcters (yes, most of them are here, folks, from Bugs Bunny [that "wascallwy wabbit"] to Yosemite Sam), with all of the above combined to invent one gigantic motion narrate for everyone extinct seven to seventy. Everyone’s out to recover an artifact that could wind up causing universal distress (a pricey gem known as “The Blue Monkey”) . Its dastardly, nefarious “owner” (Steve Martin) wants to construct definite the world is freed from all human existence, and prefers to “monkey around” with evolution, so to command. It’s a speed against time, as our female assistant (Elfman), son of a movie star (Fraser), Bugs, Daffy Duck (and an all-star cast of “Tunes” attempt to free a senior movie star (Dalton) from the clutches of one excited scientist (Martin), who is the head of ACME Corporation. This trot stretches from Las Vegas to Paris, France, to the wilds of Africa (Upright NOTE: The Nevada Desert does not bear any species of various cacti – honest shrubs of tumbleweed and tons of sand. The saguaro cactus plants were there to provide a backdrop for Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner to build their spectacular entrances) . All of the elements that were featured in the classic Warner Bros. cartoons are here: classic character lines (ex: “What’s Up Doc”, “What In Tarnation”, etc.), various seek gags (ex: automated intention running out of fuel inches before touching ground, the positioning of Daffy Duck’s beak, etc.), including others not mentioned here. Bill Goldberg (another wrestler turned actor) gives a masterful performance as one of the abominable guys as well. Even the brief cameo of Michael Jordan is beneficial of a look-see. Also, besides the too-brief appearance of Quickly “The Fastest Mouse In All Mexico” Gonzales, the only thing really missing, is Speedy’s slow-footed cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez. If only this breeze included a visit to Mexico (including Speedy’s and Slowpoke’s mouse buddies), then “Looney Tunes: Encourage In Action” would have netted a five-star rating for definite. As it is, it earns all four stars for its directorial and animation qualities (not to mention a pleasing human and not-so-human main and supporting cast), which makes it a must-see motion record. As Porky Pig would say: “TH-TH-THE-THAT’S ALL FOLKS!!!”.

When I walked into the theatrer opening night to leer this movie, I was filled with great thoughts for the film. And it turns out it was more than what I expected. LOONEY TUNES: Encourage IN ACTION had everything a movie lover would like: action, adventure, and, well..comedy!

The film had many humorous scenes that anybody, age 5 or 45, would like, including a Wal-mart in the middle of a desert, and a car traipse through Las Vegas in a gaze car and Jeff Gordon’s NASCAR car. Plus the cast really did an genuine job. Steve Martin as the ACME chairman really shot out in the movie, whereas Jenna Elfman’s and Brendan Fraser’s rivalry/love really was silly. And the Looney Tunes characters were sizable, especially Bugs Bunny acting out the “Psycho” shower scene re-make, in which Jenna Elfman opens the curtain and Bugs screaming with chocolate syrup-like blood going down the drain.

Warner Brothers did an estimable job with this movie overall. It is the perfect movie to spy with your family during the holidays. I totally recommend anyone, children or adults, to view LOONEY TUNES: Encourage IN ACTION.

Koch Lorber Films presents “IMAGINARY WITNESS: HOLLYWOOD AND THE HOLOCAUST” (25 December 2007) (92 mins/B&W/Color) (Dolby Digital) — This is an expertly made documentary on Hollywood, not unprejudiced how they handled one topic, but how they are embroiled in original politics — There will be some surprises to some moviegoers and clips from some relatively unknown gems, some of which I have never seen and will now recognize out! — Otherwise, I have to give this documentary a large thumbs up — Narrated by Gene Hackman and featuring a mighty series of clips and interviews, IMAGINARY Sight is a revelation, not least for its gargantuan inclusion of material from BEFORE the Holocaust even happened, including American newsreel footage of Nazi book burning that treat it like a fraternity prank and pre-war Hollywood films in which characters refer to Jews as non Aryans — This is one documentary not to be missed.

I found this documentary to be a compelling search for. It begins with an explanation for the lack of portrayal in Hollywood movies about the rising Nazi threat abet in the early 1940s. The reason for this was due to the fact that Germany accounted for 10% of Hollywood’s foreign market. But economics wasn’t the only reason for the dearth of anti-Nazi depictions in movies made by Hollywood. There was quite a bit of anti-semitism within the US itself – e.g. the Ku Klux Klan and the German Bunde [sic], an organization that was based in the US and represented the interests of the grand German population in the States did not want to survey attacks on Hitler or the Nazis.

Yet, there were some compelling portrayal of life under the Nazis and how it affected the Jews. Movies like The Mortal Storm with Jimmy Stewart told the fable of a estimable, upper middle class Jewish family in Germany and how the anti-semitic movement in Germany under Hitler and the Nazis affects them. There are also movies like The colossal Dictator starring Charlie Chaplin [who funded the movie himself], playing dual roles of a Jewish barber and a parody of Hitler. It was in the Huge Dictator that the word “Jew” is first referenced in a Hollywoood production [even in the Mortal Storm, the phrase "non-Aryan" is ragged when referencing Jews].

This is a well-researched documentary and for someone like me who is enthusiastic on anything to do with the Holocaust and WW II history, I found it to be a minefield of intriguing historical facts and trivia. I made a list of classic movies that I opinion to peer up and add to my library – movies like “To Be or Not to Be”, starring Carole Lombard [a comedic attack on Nazi ideology], None Shall Speed [1944], The Search [1948], and Singing in the Dim [1956].

Besides covering the classic movies dealing with the Holocaust, there are also references to more contemporary productions such as Schindler’s List, Sophie’s Choice, War and Remembrance [1988 mini-series], and of course Holocaust [1978 mini-series].

A must-watch documentary for those involved in the Holocaust and Hollywood’s depiction of it through the years.

Released in 1976, The Song Remains The Same is footage taken on three nights in Led Zeppelin’s 1973 concert at Unusual York’s Madison Square Gardens. The band performs “Rock and Roll,” “Dismal Dog,” “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” “No Quarter,” “The Song Remains The Same,” “The Rain Song,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Stairway to Heaven,” “Moby Dick,” “Heartbreaker,” and “Whole Lotta Appreciate.” The film is structured such that it starts off with a fantasy sequences and then shots of the band at home with their families before the tour starts, then there’s documentary footage of the band arriving in Current York and driving into Manhattan, before the concert begins. The onstage shots are largely of Robert Plant, with some of Jimmy Page, less of John Bonham, and really only one or two of John Paul Jones (who literally wears a heart on his sleeve) . Robert Plant is dressed in jeans, shirtless under a dainty vest, John Paul Jones is also shapely in some sort of Victorian garb, Jimmy Page is an alien in a star suit, and John Bonham a lad in white pants and a t-shirt. The onstage footage is okay, but there’s probably too mighty camera attention given to Robert Plant, rock ‘n’ roll’s expansive Adonis, not nearly enough to Jimmy Page, rock ‘n’ roll’s ample Anubis. For some of Page’s solos the camera is elsewhere (such as on John Paul Jones during the extraordinary “Since I’ve Been Loving You” solo, or on all the other members of the band when the crunchy riff of “Dazed and Confused” kicks in at the beginning of the song), or even when the camera is on Page during a solo the focus is too high and you can’t stare what he’s doing with his hands, very frustrating. During other solos the director cuts to a fantasy sequence or shows documentary footage. Sometimes this works well, such as during the wanky 20-minute “Dazed and Confused” solo, but I’d liked to have watched the “No Quarter” solo.

The fantasy sequence that initiate the movie is probably the best one, showing John Bonham, manager Peter Grant and tour manager Richard Cole dressed up as gangster hitmen driving an old-timer from one country estate to another, which they move to shoot up with machine guns. Whoever their enemies are (one of them, apparently, is Roy Harper) is never explained, the episode is quite surreal. Then it goes to the reveal day, Peter Grant is on a phone, a message is dispatched, a messenger delivers a letter to Robert Plant on his farm in Bron-Yr-Aur where he’s watching his kids playing, the five-year-old Carmen Jane and the two-year-old Karac (who would, tragically, die of a viral infection four years after), John Bonham is plowing the fields with a tractor, John Paul Jones is reading “Jack and the Beanstock” to his daughters Jacinda, Tamara and Kierra, Peter Grant is driving an old-timer with a woman, Richard Cole is driving another old-timer to a pub, and Jimmy Page is playing a hurdy gurdy by the lake (he turns around, his shades glow orange and the world goes psychedelic) . John Paul Jones gets the only lines of any of the intro or fantasy sequences, when he reads the letter: “Tour dates!” (goofy grin) . “This is Tomorrow!” (discover of terror) . Cue Led Zeppelin’s jet The Starship landed in Unusual York, limousines, police escort, the pastoral “Bron-Yr-Aur” plays as the limos near Madison Square Gardens. Doves cruise through the air. We are in a dusky, crowded plot, the band seems to be onstage, we hear the massive drum intro to “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” then the lights approach on and it’s Led Zeppelin!!!!

But you do scrutinize some Jimmy Page, there is even a nice shot that highlights drops of sweat that have fallen on his Les Paul. In many of the shots of Robert Plant, his crotch is in definite understanding and the shape of his genitals is quite clearly outlined through his tight jeans. Titanic crowd shots, including scenes of girls in rapt attention, plenty of stoners, even sad guys dressed like pimps. Frosty theremin bits, including one blast in “No Quarter,” and plenty more in “Whole Lotta Treasure.” Too many non-band members in plan in some of the shots, so it’s not very intimate. Bonzo working the drum, grimacing and gnashing his teeth, flicking his tongue. Snatches of “San Francisco (Be Determined To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) ” sung during “Dazed and Confused,” also the violin bow, and a tiny bit of “Gloomy Sabbath” at one moment. There’s a chilly guitar pickle at the extinguish of “Dazed and Confused” that could probably even be considered a song of its enjoy. The camera work, while it was generally quite aged throughout, does some captivating things at times, such as going around 360 degrees as some points, and at one point in “Stairway to Heaven” there is a frosty split-screen mirror doubling thing, like Prince did in “When Doves Sob,” highlighting Jimmy Page playing guitar (and another of Robert Plant quadrupled. Of course, in other parts you glean the sense that shots from other parts of the night have been stitched edited together, and there is occasionally the feeling that what we’re watching is authentic – apparently some gaps in footage were filled by having the band re-shoot on a recreated stage in 1974, aping their movements of that night in Fresh York. But the band is tight, and it is wonderful how, after a 20 slight digression in the solo of “Dazed and Confused,” the band gets suitable benefit into the song without stumbling in the slightest.

There are also subtly comic bits, like when Robert Plant flashes the two-finger salute with one hand and the V for Victory with the other during the “you know sometimes words have two meanings” lyric. Of course, there’s also the renowned “Moby Dick” drum solo where everyone goes off, that reveal Bonzo throwing away the sticks and using his hands to drum, splicing elegantly at one point to a clip of Jason Bonham on the drums – he must have been five years stale in the shot. Provocative in “Whole Lotta Treasure,” you actually behold Jimmy Page for the first time stepping up to the mic to create some sort of backup vocals in the chorus, although you don’t really hear him. Why that song and no other? Nice shot of Jimmy playing the theremin in “Whole Lotta Esteem,” then Robert in Jimmy’s underarm. Chilly shot of Orange amp head at 1:58:23. Robert ad-libs a lyric “some are lined with gold – Acapulco Gold.” They accomplish the situation and Bonzo attacks a gong with a flaming mallet, and the gong frame lights up. The band walks offstage, the house lights approach on, and the band gets into their limo and moves on. The band are seen at the airport getting into the Starship, and that’s all there is.

Besides the opening fantasy scene, four others appear throughout the movie; the first one spliced into the concert is John Paul Jones’, which comes during a long organ and guitar interval in “No Quarter,” it shows him playing a titanic church organ, then riding around in a screen with three other masked horsemen, before he returns home to a Victorian household and his ravishing wife and daughter (played by Jimmy Page’s girlfriend at the time and their daughter) . Robert’s fantasy scene is during “The Song Remains The Same” and “The Rain Song,” it shows him on a beach with a sword, riding around on a horse, galloping, eating a large red toadstool he found in the forest, the sword burning on the beach at night, a castle where he uses his falcon to attack people in the castle, then he goes up and has a sword fight, rescuing a damsel in harm. Broad long shot of him riding in the mountains, the camera pulls relieve to note the large valley he’s entering. Jimmy’s fantasy scene is in “Dazed and Confused” and shows a mountain at night, a stout moon, Jimmy climbing up the mountain (the draw illustrious occultist and mountaineer Alistair Crowley, his idol, did on so many treacherous passes), kind of an strange notion for such an un-athletic person. He reaches a ledge where a man is standing, it is The Hermit from the Tarot deck (and also seen on the band’s fourth album) . The Hermit lifts his head and regresses in age until you realise it’s Jimmy Page, then a baby Jimmy, then a foetus in the womb, then a flash of lightning, then he ages again into The Hermit (later in Dazed and Confused” there’s also a frosty portion where a shot of Jimmy freezes and the camera zooms up into his peek and cuts to a documentary scene) . John Bonham’s “fantasy” sequence in “Moby Dick” is more like shots of him hanging out with his family. He’s got shorter hair than he did onstage in 1973, and is shown with some sort of a mullet, playing pool, hugging his wife.

Documentary clips that are interspersed point to Robert and Peter talking, Peter Grant arguing about how they caught people selling bootleg material inside the venue – posters – and arguing with the venue manager about it, security cops and fans hanging around outside, a cop on horseback saying “no comment,” guys getting let in without tickets, a guy getting chased and nabbed and taken into a toilet by security cops, another guy getting ejected, there is also some footage concerning the lost $200,000, for which there was a press conference at the time and some of the people fervent were taken in for questioning.

The extras on the second disc are not poor, although there’s nothing really grand there either. There’s a news recount from a Tampa TV, showing lots of long-hairs and parking lots paunchy of 1970s gas guzzlers, channel that is probably the crappiest bit of news reporting that I’ve ever heard, talking about the biggest crowd ever assembled in “the history of the world!!” Yes, 50,000 people were there, and scraggly mustachioed John Jones reported on it. “I’m joyful to say that one of the group’s four members has my same name, that’s John Paul Jones,” he cleverly points out. He repeats himself, “Now, I said this was the largest single performance crowd ever to benefit any concert in the history of the world, and I meant it!” The host then jumps in and repeats John Jones’ intro of the band: “Their names are Robert Plant, John Benham, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. Robert, Jimmy, John and John; doesn’t quite have the appeal of John, Paul, George and Ringo, but they certainly have the drawing power of the Beatles.” Hey – who’s “John Benham? ” Sheesh. There’s also some more footage of the robbery of $200,000, a puny allotment of which was keep in the film, as ell as the modern film trailer. Then there’s an 8-minute long interview with Robert Plant and manager Peter Green on a boat going down the Thames, not of great interest except when Robert hints at how they “rented the sharks,” referring to the sinful shark incident with the groupie. There are four other tracks that weren’t crop into the movie: “Over The Hills And Far Away,” “Celebration Day,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” and “The Ocean.” All of the performances are straight, meaning no cutting into documentary footage or fantasy sequences.

Whether you’re a Led-Head like me or impartial a casual Zeppelin fan, this is mandatory viewing material. It’s undoubtedly one of the finest guitar performances ever caught on film. Ever. The things Jimmy pulls off are extraordinary. With this DVD you collect to sight Led Zeppelin all at the height of their creativity, talent and ability. I was a miniature surprised when I first realized that the newly included songs that were left off the novel motion portray were placed on a separate disk and not inserted into their respective places in the concert film. But then I read that due to honest reasons, they weren’t allowed to alter the current format of the film…only remaster the sound and images, but not mess around with the order of songs. So they had to set those other songs from the NY concerts on a separate disk. No biggie, at least you now have them all. The Ocean, Celebration Day and others! Some cold extras that I hadn’t seen before.

Some people who don’t understand Led Zeppelin have complained that the live versions don’t sound like the studio versions. However, Led never tried to reproduce that sound. They played these songs differently every night. Another complaint is that some say Zep live is self-indulgent. It’s not. Per Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin live allows for all four members to pick their turn in “steering the ship.” In this manner, it’s actually very splendid to the other members and not selfish. What else can be said that hasn’t already been said by thousands (millions? ) of other Zep fans. This concert is stout and the level of musicianship is awe-inspiring. And why wouldn’t you want to peruse Jimmy at his height, playing his double-neck Gibson plus his renowned Les Pauls! If you like rock music, you’ve got to have it.
